There are many spam-bots that roam the internet collecting email information without you even knowing. When these robots spot keywords like an email address, it collects and stores that information.
Any time you have your email displayed on the internet in plain text, you run the risk of receiving excess spam mail.
Though it is difficult to block 100% of these robots, you can drastically cut down their successful attempts by using a php contact form or by displaying your email as an image so it can't be read by a spam-bot.
